By the way, fish have been known to jump over those tank dividers with irritating frequency. They can be remarkably resourceful!

Just for the heck of it, I figure out the unrestrained population trends mentioned above to month 12. By then there are a few mortalities. All of the original guppies are gone. (Told you this was a conservative estimate in terms of life span and fry drops).  40 of the guppies born in month 1 and month 2 also would die of old age.

However there would be 60,900 fry born in month 12 alone!. They would join the survivors from the preceding months to number 112,664 guppies!
