Blue Adult+Blue Adult= Blue Fry? | 10 comments (9 topical, 1 editorial, 0 hidden)
Re: Blue Adult+Blue Adult= Blue Fry? (none / 1) (#1)

I think it depends on the genetic history of both of the parents.... for example one of there ancestors may have been red, but because it was such a latent gene it would be overpowered by the more dominant blue. Though the gene continues to exist and can surface at any time down the gene structure..

Take human genetics for example, eye color to be more specific. I think the strength of human eye color goes like this from weakest to strongest as from lightness to darkest color. Say a blue eyed person marries a brown eyed person and they have kids, the likeliness of them having blue eyed kids is less then brown, and on down the line it would continue, brown eye, after brown eye, till all the sudden a blue eye will show up.... The same would be said for green and blue, blue overpowers green.

But that to be said coloring has other advantages and disadvantages. As much for human eyes as for guppies tales I'm sure...

So in short if your mating guppies are true strains then you may get a little of both.. The males more likely to take on the coloring then the females. But if there not true strains then you never know what you might get.... A living breathing breading surprise bag..

Oh and can you be sure that she hasn't already been pregnant as stated many times a guppy can hold what she needs to have fry for quite a long time for many different batches, for perhaps many different males.... So with breading its kind of iffy unless you know the fishs history, either through the original breeder, or by breeding out the guppy alone till she is empty and then experimenting with different males to see where each color change comes from..

BTW.. I know nothing about genetics... so don't take anything as fact.. I just read some stuff and am trying to recollect it to the best of my abilities... :) :) :)

I understand!
When you say that the female could hold a sperm of a male I have NEVER EVER seen before is very true, I've never thought about it that way! Thank you!
Also, what does cull mean, I am very VERY new to this fish stuff!
Thanks again! :)

cull means when you get rid of (destroy) fry or fish that have irregularities or just things that you dont want in a fish. cull is a nice way of saying kill.... ;/ though now that i think of it cull isnt a nice way or saying it :(

Culling could be euthanizing extra fish. But also (none / 0) (#6)
by unclescott on Tue Feb 15, 2005 at 07:31:47 AM PST

it could mean giving extra fish to a school, day care center or waiting room somewhere. (Once stocked an entire school diistrict, at least those classes which wanted guppies). It could be giving/ selling swapping them with or to a LFS. Realize that they may get used as feeders if fairly "plain."

If is also possible to use them as feeders if you have a carnivore that needs live food. I wouldn't want to get fed to something larger, but that also is what happens to extras and unique sports in nature.

On the Euthanasia thing, see the quicklinks for more.

All the best!

Culling is part of breeding guppies (none / 0) (#7)

If you have a couple females and are raising a few fry then yeah I could see giving a few here and there away.  But if you have many females the best way to cull is to feed them to the larger females.  otherwise its culling time and yes that means destroying inferior fish.

If you want to breed them you have to be ruthless when culling. I know this sounds mean but if you dont youll end up with too many fish of low quality and never be able to give them all away.

start with the deformed and weaker looking fry then the smaller looking fry.

As they grow older you cull the early maturing males and smaller females.

Then when they get old enough to start seeing fin development and color you cull those fish with poor fin shape and color. then you look at body size and shape and cull again.

out of 40-50 fry you should end up with a few quality males and females. then you start the process again.

beleive me I know about saving every last one of them and I really would hate to cull but if your going to be serious about raising quality fish you cull the fish that are not up to standard.

Now if you have a huge extra tank say 50-100 gallons you could throw alot of your better culls in there and then sell them off or give them away but you will have to cull some fry if your going to breed and raise guppies thats just the way it is.

Other wise you would need a lake to house all the guppies you will have within a few years ;)

One of the most famous guppy breeders even culls his females if they eat fry when they give birth think about that??!!

Why do you cull early maturing males?

Because they are smaller and will always be smaller ( runts ).  Another thing I have noticed is the late blooming males seem to have better fin shape less ragged edges things like that.
