Re: Is there an independent LFS (live fish store) (none / 0) (#2)

Manders how big is your tank? If you don't want to do the fishless cycle by adding ammonia out of a bottle try this.

If it's a 45 litre I suggest just getting 2 guppies to start with, wait a month and then get 2 more, wait another month and get another 2 and stop when you have 10. Your patience will pay off. Get 2 females first as that way the male won't harrass a single female. Feed the fish sparingly until cycling is complete and then for a week after each new additions to allow all the good bacteria to build up.

Also really think about getting a quarantine tank. I have one that is only 14 litres and I snitched a tiny bit of gravel out of another tank along with a small plastic plant. There is a short heater that is about 50W I think and a cheapie corner filter with floss in it running off a single air pump. That would comfortably hold 2 guppies for up to 4 weeks quarantine and when you've finished adding fish it doubles well as a fry tank.

Good Luck to you and your new fish

Ok, well how about a total of 4 male guppies in that tank. Even starting out with 2 guppies though will be pushing your Ammonia and Nitrites up high as the tank cycles.

Wherever you end up getting the fish from, ask if you could possibly buy a small amount of gravel from the same tank, even just 2 cupfuls to help kickstart the cycle. Keep the gravel wet and get it home and in your tank as quickly as possible.

How many fish did you have in the 5 gallon?

Well the rule of thumb is that you should have 1 gallon of water per square inch of fish, so basicly with guppies you want around 2 gallons per full grown guppy.. For easiest tank upkeep, more fish, equals more water changes..

What would a square inch of guppy look like? :) (none / 0) (#8)

I might have culled that individual. ;)

I do think that most of us crowd guppies too much. Ferociously faithful water changes can overcome that some, but then we are trapped by the partial water changes schedule of a couple of times a week.

ATB!
