I just got a new aquarium, but my guppies.. | 15 comments (15 topical, editorial, 0 hidden)
Re: I just got a new aquarium, but my guppies.. (none / 0) (#2)

Is there anything else living in the new tank? like snails, plants etc.?

It would be good to know the water is liveable and it helps to add good bacteria, etc. to the water as well.

How about Chlorine removal? Even after a week of bubbling air into the water most tap water will not turn loose of its Chloroamine and that can be deadly.

Just a few thoughts - but I would be sure something else could live in the water before committing my favorite pets.

Let us know . . .

Well no... although this  sounds evil, and i dont plan to do it, is it true that stores buy "cheap" fish and put them into new tanks so they can produce the necessary bacteria into the water?? I dont know about you, but no matter what the price, a fish's life is never "cheap"

or at least someome into fantasy pets. Perhaps you have noticed that this is a a guppy site. Your first mention of those sites was deleted, not recognizing your moniker and assuming that was just a troll.  Please leave them off in the future. You point was made.

I think you hesitancy to put a snail into the aquarium is commendable. When Dr. Harrison suggested that to you, I think he was assuming that you were familiar with what conditioning and seasoning of the water is and familiar with cycling an aquarium. Unfortunately there are stores which don't tell customers about that, but don't let their ignorence and irresponsibility cripple you in the hobby.

Do you understand what cycling an aquarium is all about? Down below you ask if you should put more water conditioner in the tank? Do you have an idea of what kind of water conditioner your should use? Again, what has your municipal water department put into the tap water which you would need to treat for. Are you aware of the fact that a conditioner will not cycle an aquarium? You may want to read several of the sections of the Immediate Help section.

Your concern about a shop putting a few relatively inexpensive fish in a tank is good. However, what is the difference between what they are doing and what you did?

That is why I have suggested that you please go to the Immediate Help section and check out what cycling an aquarium is. That is also why I suggested in a comment above that you look into that fish-less cycling and probably get test kits for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

If you aren't willing to at least check into what cycling is, you might just as well take that big tank and set-up back to the store and give away your guppies. Then you will have more time for the things which interest you. ;)

all the best,
u.s.

But please, next time you confront me, please dont tell me to give away my fish just because I dont know what cycling is.. you made me sound like a bad owner, and i dont want to be called that. I dont know if you were trying to do that, but please dont do it in the future.. And I also found out how to take off my siggy finally.
