Re: Is this the same aquarium (none / 0) (#2)

Gouramis do tend to be a bit territorial with each other, especially if they are of the same variety.

I recently purchased two Red Flame Dwarf Gouramis, and was told to be sure that I had sufficient hiding places (rocks, plants, areas) in my tank so they could lay claim to their own space.  This tank is a 20 gal. long.

The only other inhabitant of this tank is a Red Tailed Black Shark, but so far he hasn't caused any issues.

I once purchased two Gold Dwarf Gourami's but one killed the other within the first 24 hours in my smaller Q tank.  Guess they were a bit more aggressive, or felt more "crowded" by those circumstances, although they were the only two fish in that tank at the time.  Thought that would help, nope.

And yes, I did have a lot of trepidation before purchasing another pair of Gouramis... just couldn't pass up the coloring of this variety.

It did take them a few days for them to stake out their preferred territory, but it seems that they are now both quite happy. Knock Wood, Petrified, or otherwise. ;o)

One other "place" a Gourami feels at home is under a broad leaf floated on the surface. This is where they sometimes will lay their eggs if or when the time comes.  So much to learn...:o)

I'm going to try to get a good photo of them in the tank to post in my album.
Will submit a diary entry when/if I can accomplish that.

Good luck and keep us posted.

:o)

I too have a pair of gouramies.. One was givin to me, and is about the size of 5 inches or so... I think she is a female... I had her with my guppies and had no sign of Aggressiveness twords them, but she did have a large mass of plastic floating plants.. (arnt all plastic floating ;p) but when i put her in another tank, the 20 gallon, she had to compete for that hidding spot, between the Placo, who likes the side of a rock, and the Ghost Catfish and Iridenect shark, who shared it with a orange type of shark, all of which ended up bowing down to the gouramie who dwarfed the others, ending up with chewed up tails, and stressed fish..

Once put back into the 55 gallon tank, it was no longer agressive and went back to its mellow self..

Now i bought another gouramie, about one third the size, but it muscled the larger gouramie from its normal spot, to a lower planted area.. Now I think its a male, which might explain why he is slightly aggro twords her.. or that they just perfer to have there own space....

Either way I think that they prefer to be slightly covered for many reasons, and that they prefer to have there own.. how would you say it... have there own home.

And yet both will let the guppies swim right beside them and never even nip at them at all....
