My best tank has gone bad | 4 comments (4 topical, editorial, 0 hidden)
Re: My best tank has gone bad (none / 0) (#1)
by guppygirl on Sun Oct 09, 2005 at 04:25:31 PM PST

Hey Miskairal,

Guess who, and what?  Yup, it's gg :o), and the SAME thing is happening to my best tank too.

Haven't had the fish losses, but hope not too, since I only have one male gup, and my two favorite Clown Loaches in there right now.

Have been hopelessly remiss on everything from water changes to posting (even signing on to GL) as late.

Are you sure about the sunlight thing? Due to the change of seasons here, opposite (ahem, backwards) from yours, I know, I did recently catch a time where "Son-Of-A-Gun" there were late afternoon rays hitting the blasted tank.

Maybe in your case you need to scope it out at the wee hours of the am?  Also, since our days are getting shorter, aren't yours getting longer?
How long do you keep the tank light itself on for?
Maybe you might need to adjust that, or perhaps need to cover a section or two until the tank can adjust.

How are you removing the algae? all at once? is it green/brown/or black?

I usually try to do it a bit at a time when I get caught off guard like this and make sure that I rinse out my filter material after it's had a chance to trap what I've loosened up.

I don't know much about Cory's, but could it be his color that doesn't look right?

Do a check on the temp, I've been caught off guard there with this tank as well, and increase the filtration and aeration.  Keep the food at the same amount, and check for odd times when it might be getting sun, or other light sources.

Hope this helps, and things get better.
Gonna go run and scrape some brown algae(was green) now that my guilt is killing me.

Take care,

gg
:o)

Hey GG, nice to hear your voice here again :)

Well the Cory died about an hour after I posted this. I really couldn't say about his colour for sure but if there was a change he was maybe a tad darker. I also put another female down with clove oil as she was fluttering around on the bottom and  her gills looked swollen. I know at this stage there is precious little that can be done.

There is definitely no sun hits that tank. I am now getting up way later than the old 4.30 but I still get up with the sun and in the afternoon it hits my pc monitor which is a bit of a pain but forces me up out of my chair for a bit. I was telling unc in an email that we've had a bit of a heat wave here where it was 34°c (97F) in the kitchen 4 days in a row and it's only spring. It's eased off now thank goodness. During the heat I was turning the lights off during the day instead of at night but all up they're on for about 12 hours a day same as always. I also remove the glass cover during the hot days and top up their water with rain water which is cooler out of the tank.

I did a big cleanup in there today. I even found a tiny fry in the filter which is one of those waterfall types! I removed the two creek plants (?aponogetons) which were looking worse than the purchased plants as they are only new and haven't had a chance to die with my care yet. The root system on those 2 plants was incredible and took up probably 1/3 of the tank bottom. I trimmed the plants down to about 1cm tall and trimmed the roots and replanted them after gravel vaccing up most of the gunk.

The algae is dark green and looking with my glasses I suspect it's bordering on having a dark blue tinge :(  It is on the gravel, the glass and the plants. The nitrates were about 15 but the pH was over 7.6 so I used a little more rain water than usual for replacement water.

I suspect it is the old diseases coming back to haunt me now that the fish are maybe more susceptable because of their age. What is left in there tonight looks healthy, even the old girl with the very bent spine. I put my 4 female fry in there as I had to put them somewhere and they came out of that tank only about 8 weeks ago.

I'll get in and re clean/rinse the filter sponges tomorrow as that's a good idea of yours which didn't occur to me and there was quite a bit of green flakes floating around by the time I finished to day.

You know one of the things I really love about the guppies is their curiosity and lack of fear when I do anything in the tank. The silver dollar on the other hand (in another tank) is so stupid that after 2 years he can't figure out that I'm not going to hurt him and that water changes occur at least weekly and that someone walking past the tank is usually bringing food and not about to commit a crime on his fish body. Duh!

Thanks gg for your help

Sorry about the tank miskairal. Sometimes tanks (none / 0) (#3)
by unclescott on Mon Oct 10, 2005 at 02:31:53 PM PST

accumulate enough "stuff" that doing a radical cleanup like you are doing or a complete restart is in order. The condition of your fish and plants should be powerful indicators of that.

Dark Green algae sound quite a bit like the blue-green slime or Cyanobacteria. That also is common in new, unbalanced tanks and again in older aquaria which get out of whack.

Different Aponogeton have different growing and hibernation cycles. Depending upon where in the world they are, these may be very different. For example, in one place they may hibernate during the rainy cycle because flod waters and turbidity would make day to day existance very difficult. Somewhere else, is less "active waters" they may grow during the wet season. so it is very difficult to generalize. The daily photoperiod - even for ambient diffused light, temperature, probably air pressure patterns and other cues may play a role. And they may well be different for Aponogeton native to East Africa, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and South East Asia. Indeed there may be differences within those large land masses.

A sudden die back by many different plant species is a red flag though as to water quality. That those Aponogeton roots are so amazingly strong is another indication that the foliage dieback was not a natural or seasonal phenomenon. When hornwort or water sprite go in a sort time period, I know there are issues with the water quality. If something as indestructable as Najas or Java moss were to die, I would know to get the fish the heck out of there NOW, if not sooner.

Yours was a good question though and smoked GG out of the woodwork. And then she confessed to having had an aquarium like that before I could. -G-

All the best!

Re: Old tanks (none / 0) (#4)

That is what I was starting to think unc, that maybe the tank was "too old". I really don't want to add any chemicals/antibiotics so is it possible to get rid of that type of algae without the use of them ie. just with continual cleaning and water changes? I don't want to buy any algae eating fish or snails either. If I were to turn the lights off for longer then the plants might suffer more. I did a 24 litre water change instead of the usual 16 litres (45 litre tank) and will repeat it on Friday hopefully.

My hubby thinks that the creek plants dont' go into a complete dormancy here although some times of the year they seem to be thriving more than others. I am still avoiding the creek myself b/c it was winter and now with such a sudden onset of summer there are snakes everywhere (and I mean everywhere!)

As for your Najas and Java moss, I bet I could kill them ;) I might even try to get some when I go the the much bigger petshop on Thursday to get my live rock.

It was good to "smoke" gg out wasn't it. I miss her round here. Between you and her I was always guaranteed a giggle (or loud chuckle) every day.
