I am having the same problem as you are but only my females have died, I had a 5 gal (I know it is small all I could afford) with 2 male and 2 female and both the female died and the male are showing no symptoms. Are the female more susceptible?  I did a water test everything is perfect my temperature is at 78 Fahrenheit I have a whisper filter and some plastic pants and painted gravel.
