Excellent article, US!  

I've read that just "tapping off" tanks in winter,
or at anytime actually, can lead to increased hardness.

I've suggested to readers on this site that if they need to add water due to evaporation, remove AT LEAST that amount first, and then fill.

If you don't have the time to vacuum right then, that's OK, just remember that you didn't, and get to it asap.

Thanks for the post, I know it will light up some "mental filaments" for some of our readers.
