Re: labor tube (none / 1) (#6)

I think I know what you're talking about...  my female guppy had a little "bubble" coming out of her for a while, and then it disappeared after she had her fry.  Thought nothing of it, but then she died suddenly right after that.

The fry were fine until about a month after birth.
Several of them began showing a little "fluffy" almost cottony looking thing sticking out of them.  Those ones got very emaciated.  Some of them almost looked like little furry udders and were half as large as the fry.
Those ones all died.

A few weeks later the remaining fry got incredibly swollen and hard looking, and I could actually see something white and ropey pressing against their insides.  I immediately thought 'worms' and tried several different remedies (Parasite Clear to treat the tank, fish food treated with metrodinazole, and lavamisole, etc.) but they also all died.
Also, EVERY single pet store in my area that carries fish products (9 stores total!) had expired Discomed, which I read here is the de-wormer of choice!  I'm not sure how effective expired meds would be... I believe the dates were Feb 2004... but wasn't willing to spend the $15 or so.

NONE of my fish (30 of whom are now deceased) ever showed anything that looked like camallanus red worms.  Just the large fluffy blobs, small bubbles, and then the swelling/ropey insides.

I was never able to figure out what happened, or what to do about it, and I'm still too freaked out to spend money on new fish.

I hope things turn out better for you  :(

I have had those fluffy blobs you talk about on some of my guppies. They have always died shortly after. From memory I think this was discussed here some time ago and I remember someone saying it was some kind of bacterial infection.

Do you remember the topic, or what the infection was???  I searched a lot and didn't find what I was looking for, at the time.
I treated with Melafix, Parasite Clear, and lavamisole treated food to no effect...  maybe I was going for the wrong thing?

I DID find a picture that looked similar, in a thread, but it wasn't answered there.

Any chance of a link to the pic?

Okay, found it:
http://photos.wemm.org/sickfish/DVC00190
It's a bit grainy, so might not be the same thing...
This looks similar to the "bubble" that my mature females showed before dying.  They were not pregnant, and there were no fry inside them after death.
The things hanging off my fry a month later looked similar, but much larger in scale to the fry.
