...."that's what I get for going on vacation without them."

You're pretty lucky to have only lost one, and had one other injured, I thought it would be worse when I read the title.

OH, the stories I could tell about going away and leaving my little finned friends behind!!!!!

Take care,

gg
:-)

Sorry there would be any casualty Maggie while you (none / 0) (#2)

were gone. Fry, because they are so small, are hard sometimes to keep going. That is why people cram as many plants into the tank as they can. Hopefully the fry can forage rotifers from the plants.

Sometimes we clean up a tank so dramatically that we actually stress the fish by suddenly altering the tank. (Have been victim of a couple of jokes - (loud voice from the fish room) "WHAT WAS THAT?")

I have a question for any readers. Do those vacation foods actually do what they are supposed to do? They probably keep some fish entertained. They certainly do look like they would had a lot of mineral to the tank (calcium? bicarbonate? plaster of Paris? what is in them?) Do they actually have enough food, unspoiled, to make a difference?

If one is going away from a tank for a couple of days, probably the best way to deal with it, is to be as faithful as one can with feeding and water changing a week or two before one leaves. Then just leave the tank! If the tank was fine before one left, it should be fine when one returns. (GG and I both have our war stories of fish sitters.)

The one caveat I have about that is that the house's air conditioning or heating system must be left set so that extreme weather will not overhead or chill the tank(s). Before we drove away for the Pacific Northwest three weeks one summer, we did separate some genders where fish might get severely harassed. The weather was very hot while we were gone. No casualties, but a huge electric bill greeted us upon our return.

My fry actually survived well while I was gone (none / 0) (#10)

It was my 20 gal community tank that seems to have suffered.

I've used smaller 3 days feeders in the past for weekend trips and they have been fully disolved by the the time we get home on Sunday.  These feeders were a different brand than what I normally use and they were only suppose to be a 7 day feeder which is why I only had my sitter check once after 1 week so he could throw another in.  By the end of our 2nd week we came home and there was still a little bit left so I think some may work better than others.

The tank looked very clean though.  Must be they foraged around pretty good while I was gone.  I think in the future I will have my sitter check more often while we're gone since some feeders do not disolve properly and I have no clue how to choose the right kind (if there is one...)

I don't know if those vacation feeders... (none / 0) (#5)

have gotten any better, but I remember WAY,WAY back putting in a large one (to last a week) and went away.

When I got home, there was this mound of disolved white gunk where the tablet had been, and many casualties.

Never used 'em again.
