I'm just talking about a simple (none / 0) (#2)

britta  water filter.  I've tested the water befoee adding it to my tank and the levels are better  than normal tap water.  I've been told by a couple different fish stores that NJ has very hard water and to add to it has numerous chemicals as well.  I've been experimenting with Aqua Safe and filtering and I've been trying to do some research t6o see what other people are doing.  My friend just adds normal tap water that has sat for a day or so.  One other adds tap water immediately and no one is suffering any losses.  The LFS says one thing, frinds say another.  Live and learn maybe?
