Now this is strange (5.00 / 1) (#1)

Hi GB!

It could be, as you have surmised, that the other female dropped if you have leopard patterned fry developing. If your blue still looks pregnant, that is an ever stronger possibility.

That is why it is useful to isolate females. They should be separated rather before they are ready to drop so they are not injured or stressed when really loaded with almost full term youngsters.

Of course if your blue was housed with leopard males (in the shop?), she may drop fry showing leopard for some 6-7 batches. Newer matings may produce more from her line (if she is mated with a blue male) but doubts should exist.

Serious guppy breeders line breed their guppies. They separate their young as soon as they show gender signs (primarilly females showing the gravid spot). Virgins are only bred after they put on some growth and to selected males which show size, robustness, color and fins appropriate for the strain. Size of females obviously correlate with the number of fry. In the meantime food which could go into fry production will be used for growth of the female.

Stud books are kept on each pair. Often a breeder will keep 2-4 lines of a color form of guppy and back cross them every so many generations, still logging who is descended from
whom. This is why one breeder recommended dedicating about 16 tanks to one strain!

For more information do a search on Google or at the IFGA site for "line breeding" "line breeding guppies" "Tom Allen line breeding guppies" (Tom is a terrific speaker on the subject.) Other animal husbandry sites probably have similar sites. There are also fish conservation committee sites which could be useful.

As for that one female which is so thin. She could just be that way. :(

It could be disease or internal parasites (something in the Heximeda line?) or just inadequate diet. If possible include some
blackworms or white worms in her diet. The fats in worms and daphnias are very similar to the fats and oils in fish eggs (even those which are fertilized and hatch in livebearer's bodies).

Females of a number of species have been known to absorb their embryos when diet or something else is not right. That is disconcerting. We even know a lady who had that happen to her!

So a guppy not able to nourish 30 fry will not have them. Females well nourished will not only have more fry, but within the parameters of whatever species they are, the fry will be a little larger and healthier than those from less well conditioned females.

Is she in a tank where she can not compete effectively for food? Maybe put her by herself. This is where small tanks come in handy. :)

Try the "worm bowl" with her. Let us know how she responds to therapy.

All the best,
US

I think her size may be diet related as well.

In addition to the "worm bowl", toss in some brine shrimp.

Give her a little space, so she doesn't have to compete for her food.

Women need pampering when they're pregnant!
I think this goes for fish too. ;-)

Oh, and yes, you can go over the one gallon per inch of fish rule.  That is just a standard most people go by.
With guppies, that can be easy to do, intentionally, or otherwise.
Just remember to "up" your maintenance on your tanks, vacuuming, water changes, testing, etc.

I'll be the first to admit that I have had to go over at times, especially when I had trouble with my LFS not having any room for my "extras" for quite a while.

At one point I thought to myself, "It's a good thing Scott L. can't see this tank right now!"

I was really stuck!! Getting another set up was out of the question financially, space wise, and husband wise.

Then one person suggested to me to take them to the bait shops by the lake, I about lost it.

But, I kept a close watch on all the fish, and as soon as I could determine one's sex, they went to my larger community tank,(if they were male)or had to remain behind.

I had to test the water each day, vacuum,(to remove any uneaten food, and add new water), add an air stone, pull out anything that didn't add value(plastic plants/decorations)and it was a ROYAL pain. =(

The good news was, I didn't loose any fish, or have anything really bad happen,(like an ich breakout, or worse). Lucky? You bet, but it wasn't all luck, there was a lot of work mixed in.

And, as soon as I could possibly correct the situation, I did.

I did find a store to take my guppies, but they didn't pay money, or even give store credit for guppies. But that was OK, they did have a clean, spacious, beautiful home for them.

And that was what I wanted for them after all.
:-)

So you can go over. I herd that you should keep 20 4-5 month old guppies in a tank. Does this mean I can go over that? Anyway, I have a site. I want you to tell me what you think (e-mail me or whatever). I will also sell my guppies on this site. I need to advertise it to get more room. Is there anyway I can do that on this site? Thanks a lot. I'll print this whole page out.
