Guppy fry are starting to get their colors | 11 comments (11 topical, 0 editorial, 0 hidden)
Does sexing out slow the growth of guppies? (none / 0) (#6)
by unclescott on Wed Dec 17, 2003 at 04:45:52 AM PST

I would guess not, but would like to hear what you guys (so to speak) would say.

When male swordtails begin to grow their swordtail, growth of the bod precipitously slows down.

Still some people would keep their genders of some fishes separate, both to control who breeds with whom and to encourage that food and energy is put into growth rather than courting and making whoppee (and little whoppees).

Thanks...

that male juvenile guppies shouldn't be kept with fry due to the pheremones the fry give off may affect their growth. (I think it was Phry)

Anyway, I sex mine out as soon as possible.
What I have found is that when the young ones are put in with their big brothers and cousins, BAM!
they color up quick. (Maybe nature's way of saying, "I'm a boy, I'm a boy, stop doing that to me!!!!)

Spirulina helps with color development too.

As far as swordtails go, I had a late blooming male, that I put into my new tank, with a little green female he seemed to prefer.
He had been in with a male that was rather a bully, and did a lot of hiding.

When I went to move him, I couldn't believe the size of his body compared to the other male.

I had to move the older male as well (Fertle Myrtle, and Aunt Stell were getting too old to be bothered by him, (they both passed recently within a couple of days of each other), peacefully at 2+ yrs.)

When I put the bag with the "bully" in the new tank, the other male came right up, <can you hear, da dum, da dum, da dum, da dum?> and just stayed there intimidating him like he was saying, "Remember MEEEEE?"

They've sort of settled out their differences, I just wish the quaranteen period for the famales would hurry up so I can improve the ratio.

Now that his sword is developing I hope his growth does slow down a bit, he's huge.

gg

While there may be slower growth because of (none / 0) (#11)

pheremones released by other fish, plain old nitrates from fish waste will slow down efficient use of food and oxygen too. Both of those problems can in part be "solved" by more water changes. Like we need to do more of those this time of year. ;)

According to Diana Walsteadt, some plants, including algae, also produce chemicals which inhibit the growth of specific other plants. I believe that is called Allelopathy and the chemicals are sometimes refered to as allelochemicals - although that terms isn't even in our Webster's New World College Dictionary. :)

She spends a whole chapter of her book (the plant book without photos of plants) on that topic and has a lot of info on the phenomenon.

Hey! An excuse to get another tank! (none / 0) (#9)

Or tanks as they may be!  I'll try with some and not the others.  See what happens.  Gosh, I hope I don't end up with couch potato guppies (nothing to do anymore).

but since i think all my gupps are like little dwarfs, i don't know, i've just recently started separating the males from females as soon as i can tell, so i will see if it makes a difference,
