Maggie's friend was doing what they should (none / 0) (#7)

have done with a bunch of a somewhat aggressive fish in keeping them in schools. If the fish are busy watching their collective tails and each other, they have less opportunity for sucker-punching other fish.

In the 1960s when Rift Lake cichlids first came into the hobby, people would spend a half - week's salary on a pair of mbuna - reasoning that South American cichlids did better in pairs - so must East African fish. Three days later they had a very expensive pretty male. :(

When they began shoe-horning a bunch of mbuna in a tank with a pile of rocks which offered several territories and hiding places (and making 5% daily water changes) it worked. It also works with barbs, assertive tetras and even some annual killies.
