Hey there (none / 0) (#3)
by cloe on Wed Nov 12, 2003 at 01:18:25 PM PST

I used to have a 20 g tank with a power whisper filter which was pretty strong, I thought more gallons per minute cleaner tank! I noticed that the guppies simply avoided the stream that was pouring in and when they would attempt to cross the stream they would be pushed down until they reached the other side. I had ALOT of plants in there to help minimize the flow but it still seemed somewhat stressful.
I never had a clamping problem with a power filter though. Clamping I have learned (the hard way) is typically associated with differant water conditions, parasites or stress. When new guppies come home I treat them all with a general antibiotic, Melafix, formalin and salt for a few days. I also spend atleast 2 hours acclimating them to their soon to be new water (real pain but I really believe it is the most important part). I have had one or two clamp out on me and die, but they may have been weaker to begin with, be joistled around in shipping, or something else. But I have not had a massive clamping problem. Sorry, trust your aquatic habits and try try again (its also part of the reason why I like very preg. guppies from breeders on the off chance that they...) good luck, Cloe

put fish in 3 tanks (none / 0) (#4)

alone, and with others. no other fish die except the new ones. I did my own little test and went to lfs and picked up a 2 pair of red and gold guppies, came home and scooped out a pair, put them in community tank and the other in a 10 gal. no floating the bag,no adding water, just added fish and that was 3 months ago. since then i have had more fry than Mcdonalds. the last fish that died came from scott l. and i floated the bag, added water slowly and 5 days later they died. scott did a water test and we have the same water, everything with the water was fine. the lfs owner said it could be the current of the water.
