Actually guppies have eggs, but they are stored (none / 0) (#4)

in the female's body at a microscopic size. In time a certain number of them are released to be fertilized by the sperm stored from the last matings. I would hazard the guess that the number of ova released for fertilization was a function of the female's size and how well she was fed.

I seem to remember reading that female livebearers are born with all the eggs they will ever have. Or is that humans? Or both and a lot of "livebearers" in between?
